Handy Seafood fire causes an estimated USD 350,000 in damages

Local media reported a fire occurred at Handy Seafood’s crab shedding plant in Crisfield, Maryland, U.S.A.

WMTD.com reported the fire started just before 2 a.m. on 29 August at the facility and caused an estimated USD 350,000 (EUR 316,000) in damages. Officials with the Maryland State Fire Marshal’s office said the fire started in the rear interior of the building and took roughly an hour to get under control. 

The cause of the fire is still under investigation, and the fire did not harm any employees.

In a statement emailed to SeafoodSource, Handy confirmed the incident and said the fire occurred in the facility’s maintenance and storage building. The spokesperson for Handy was not able to confirm the reported damages.

“Local firefighters responded promptly to the scene and successfully contained the fire. No injuries were reported, and the fire caused minimal disruption to the plant's operations,” the spokesperson said.

Local authorities are investigating the cause of the fire.
