Skretting breaks ground on aquaculture feed factory in Vietnam

Aquafeed and animal health provider Skretting has broken ground on a new feed factory in southern Vietnam.

The groundbreaking ceremony took place on 3 March. The plant will cost EUR 24 million (USD 28.5 million) and will have capacity to produce 100,000 metric tons (MT) of products per year, the company said in a 10 March statement.

Skretting said the new factory will be located next to its existing facilities in the southern province of Long An, which are operating at full capacity to meet local demand. The location will improve the logistics of supplying feed to other provinces in the Mekong Delta, the most important aquaculture region in Vietnam.

The new plant represents part of Skretting’s commitment to aquaculture development in Vietnam, as well as other markets in Southeast Asia, according to Skretting CEO Therese Log Bergjord. Skretting is owned by Nutreco, a global company in animal nutrition and aquafeed.

“This new factory in Vietnam is a logical and necessary step towards strengthening Skretting and Nutreco's position as a global competitor in Asia,” Bergjord said. “We have a very solid growth strategy, matched with the huge potential of the sector. We have activated an expert team to make sure we deliver, and I’m excited to see how we continue to grow in the coming years.”

Skretting entered Vietnam in 2010 with the acquisition of local fish and shrimp feed producer Tomboy Aquafeed JSC, and opened its a shrimp feed plant in 2017. Skretting said it has worked to upgrade all of its operations in Vietnam, from research and raw material procurement to products and services for the aquaculture sector.

On 4 March, Skretting announced it is building a new, USD 6.1 million (EUR 5.1 million) research and development facility in Ecuador. The move aims to support the shrimp sector – the fastest-growing aquaculture protein, with world growth expected at 4 to 5 percent a year over the next few years – with the latest R&D.
