Description:

Around the world, critical natural habitats such as forests, grasslands, mangroves, wetlands, and peatlands are converted into cropland, grazing land, or aquaculture ponds for the expansion of food production. This race to clear land for agriculture and aquaculture results in greenhouse gas emissions, habitat and biodiversity loss, disruption of water cycles, and the marginalization of the communities that depend on them. In the seafood sector, the rapid growth of aquaculture has resulted conversion of coastal mangrove forests and other wetlands – vitally important ecosystems for biodiversity, commercial fisheries production, and mitigating climate change. Around 30-50% of mangrove losses in some tropical countries were due to a rapid expansion of shrimp farming since the 1970s.

Farmed shrimp is an industry poised for transformation. As one of the most valuable traded seafood commodities globally, farmed shrimp has the potential to sustainably support the growing global demand for animal protein through improved practices and responsible production. In this session, World Wildlife Fund, Conservation International, the Aquaculture Stewardship Council (ASC), and Clark Labs will provide an overview for industry on the links between farmed shrimp and deforestation, recent initiatives, and tools that can help companies to make credible commitments to conversion-free and deforestation-free seafood, assess risk within their supply chains, and build effective mitigation strategies.
