Pure Salmon Technology has acquired HyFlow, a waterborne feed technology, from Graintec, an aquafeed solutions company that filed for bankruptcy in August 2023.

Based in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates, Pure Salmon Technology was created out of the merger of Pure Salmon and the Norwegian RAS division of Krüger Kaldnes, which 8F acquired from Veolia in June 2021.

Pure Salmon Technology CEO Kent Kongsdal Rasmussen said the HyFlow acquisition includes designs, patents, and intellectual property rights for the high-capacity, automatic feeding system that optimizes the distribution of feed in indoor tanks.

"This acquisition aligns well with our feed offerings, where our in-house dry feed solution plays a vital role. Alongside the water-based HyFlow solution, we can now offer the strongest range of feed solutions in the market to our customers," Rasmussen said. "Pure Salmon Technology has undergone rapid development in a short period of time, and this development continues, focusing, among other things, on technologies and solutions that complement our core business, namely RAS design. The acquisition of HyFlow is another step in expanding our platform for the benefit of our customers."

Rasmussen said adding the HyFlow system “is more than just a product; it is the core of an innovative solution.”

“Delivering efficiency in the feeding process, HyFlow has a direct impact on fish welfare, operating costs, and sustainability,” he said. “HyFlow plays a crucial role in Pure Salmon Technology's goal of providing customers with comprehensive solutions.”

Pure Salmon Technology also announced the hiring of former Graintec Process Technology Manager Leif Grønbæk Holm as its new feed process development business manager. Holm will lead the integration process.

"This is a unique opportunity to strengthen the focus on feed delivery within RAS facilities and optimize the feeding process, a substantial part of fish farming. It also allows for further development of HyFlow-based feeding solutions for both new and existing installations,” Holm said. "The integration provides the possibility to offer complete RAS solutions with HyFlow-based systems integrated into our control system. This simplifies operation, data collection, and analysis for our customers. The entire process of handling feed is covered using gentle technologies. This includes delivery, transport, storage, and distribution of feed in the RAS facility.”

In October, Høng, Denmark-based Simatek Bulk Systems acquired Graintec’s Chilean subsidiary, Ingenieria Graintec Chile, according to the company’s LinkedIn.

Graintec, which counted Mowi and Proximar as customers, filed for bankruptcy after making a big bet on SalmoTerra, an RAS start-up that hired Graintec to build an RAS salmon farm in Øygarden, Norway in December 2021. But both firms filed for bankruptcy after SalmoTerra failed to raise adequate funding for the project. SalmoTerra fell NOK 32 million (USD, EUR ) in debt and was sued for failure to pay rent, according to We Are Aquaculture.
