Kingfish Zeeland announced 25 February it is changing its corporate name to The Kingfish Company.
The move will better reflect the company’s global presence, as it seeks to open a new recirculating aquaculture system (RAS) yellowtail farm in Jonesport, Maine, U.S.A. The company is also expanding its RAS farm at its headquarters in Kats, The Netherlands. The Kingfish Company will serve as the parent company for Kingfish Zeeland and Kingfish Maine, company CEO Ohad Maiman said in a press release.
“Our corporate name change reflects our evolution towards a global operation and our planned expansion in both the Netherlands and our new facility in the United States,” Maiman said. “Recent investments in our project will allow the Kingfish Company to double the current capacity of our Netherlands facility, as well as fund the permitting process of our US facility in Maine.”
In December 2019, the company announced funders of a round of financing for its expansion included Creadev, an investment firm based in Paris, France, and Rabo Corporate Investments, a division of Rabobank. It added animal nutrition and aquafeed producer Nutreco to its list of funders in January.
Kingfish has designed a proprietary recirculating aquaculture system (RAS) it is planning to scale to produce 5,000 metric tons (MT) of yellowtail kingfish in The Netherlands and 6,000 MT in Maine. Its plans for the Jonesport facility are currently in the permitting phase, the company said.
The company carries certifications from the Aquaculture Stewardship Council and Best Aquaculture Practices, and has been named a "Green Choice" by the Good Fish Foundation. Its fish is available fresh and frozen from the Netherlands year-round, and the company is making daily deliveries across the European Union and regular shipments to the U.S.
