A Canadian grocery chain’s new live seafood bar is a hit with shoppers.
Richmond, British Columbia, Canada-based T&T Supermarket, the largest Asian supermarket chain in Canada, recently opened its first seafood bar at its new store in Richmond. The 70,000-square-foot store is also the chain’s largest.
At the new store, customers can order “instant-cooked” live seafood, including lobsters and prawns.
“Not only can you choose from a variety of specially selected fresh seafood, but the in-house chef will cook it right there in front of you,” said T&T, which operates 26 stores, in a press release. “In true restaurant-style fashion, customers can even choose the cooking method and the accompanying sauces at supermarket prices.”
Shoppers were waiting around an hour to eat at the seafood bar the first two weeks after the store opened. Diners, who receive a pair of gloves and no cutlery, are seated in the store’s seafood department “surrounded by creatures in live tanks and buckets containing orders zipping overhead,” The Canadian Press reported.
The store also offers an expansive fresh seafood department, sushi, and numerous cooked Asian dishes and other prepared foods.
Loblaw Companies, T&T’s parent company, declined to comment on the new store.
